Conor McGregor is undoubtedly the UFC’s highest earning star. Although the Irishman tends to keep his finances on the down-low, his past is rather shocking.
After earning a reasonable $15m against Nate Diaz, McGregor faces what could possibly be the biggest pay cheque of his career when he fights Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205. Reports suggest that his payout could be around $20m.
As many of you know, Conor used to be on the dole-collecting social security money. Unfortunately for the lad, that’s all he had to keep himself float until he began taking an interest in the UFC.
“When things were really bad I didn’t have a pot to p*ss in,” he said in a previous interview. “Really, nothing.”
During an interview with the Sunday Independent, his coach explained how he was broke, but still kept his focus on winning the fight during the European Cage Warrior promotion:
“It wasn’t easy. Conor was on the dole, earning €100 a fight and training at the height of winter in a cold gym. Now, I don’t care how passionate you are, but there are always going to be periods thinking ‘F**k this! What am I doing here?”
“Conor’s annual earnings for that five-year period was something like €1,500 a year. There was no money and I was running out of ideas. The UFC was a closed shop.”
But more than anything, the truth about his past will really get you in the feels after you read this screenshot. During the conversation, McGregor didn’t have the money to pay up:
Currently in the Forbes rich list, Conor has become an international success in a very short space of time. Well done lad.
