Tupac Shakur, widely regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time, will be formally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017! I knew 2017 had to have better news than 2016.
Tupac has sold over 75 million albums worldwide which makes him one of the best-selling artists of all time. I remember getting proper happy when I sold 2 copies of my DJ Mix tape in year 7 – maybe one day ‘DJ BeatSmith’ will be recognised too? The embarrassment.
Tupac has only just become eligible for the honour, due to his debut album 2Pacalypse Now being released 25 years ago. What an absolute banger of an album by the way…with tunes like ‘Brenda’s Got a Baby’ and ‘Rebel of the Underground’.
He will be inducted alongside Pearl Jam, Joan Baez, Journey, Electric Light Orchestra and Yes. Other big names who actually missed out on the induction include Depeche Mode, Janet Jackson and Chaka Khan.
The ceremony which will see him induced into the Hall of Fame will take place on April 7th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, which looks like a definite must-see when it airs on HBO a little bit later.
Got to love that Hip Hop and Rap artists are finally beginning to become fully recognised for their highly influential and emotive tracks; Tupac currently being one of only six Hip Hop/Rap artists in the Hall of Fame… You could say we gotta make some ‘Changes’.
Though it’s certainly looking promising, just last year Kendrick Lamar had the privilege of presenting N.W.A with the prestigious honour too.
Tupac once wondered if ‘Heaven Got a Ghetto’. If it does, he probably won’t be watching…too busy having a ‘Gangsta Party’.
Tupac Amaru Shakur. RIP.
